Guiseppe Cherubini (Italian, 1867-1960), "Venice: il Ponte della Paglia", 1908, watercolor on paper, signed and dated lower left, 28 3/4 in. x 21 1/2 in., framed Note: This enchanting watercolor of the junction of the Rio del Palazzo with the Bacino di San Marco shows partial views of the Palazzo delle Prigioni and a corner of the great Palazzo Ducale on the left, with the Ponte dei Sospiri -the "Bridge of Sighs"-behind. Cherubini is remembered in Venice as the fresco painter of the ceiling (1907) of Longhena's 17th century church of Santa Maria dei Derelitti, and also of the high altar chapel with its cupola of the medieval church of Sant' Andrea, at the south end of the Venetian Lagoon.
