Dahl resigned from the military in 1874 to concentrate solely on his art. He had his first exhibitions in 1876 in Dusseldorf and Philadelphia, and began to concentrate on distinctly Norwegian landscape and genre scenes. Dahl was a personal friend Kaiser Wilhelm II, who owned many of the painter's works. In 1910 Dahl was appointed Royal Prussian Professor of Art. His works are in the permanent collections of numerous institutions, including the National Galleries in Oslo and Prague.
