Description:

Harold Rudolph (American/Louisiana, 1850-1883/84), "Fishing on the Louisiana Bayou", oil on canvas, signed lower right, W.E. Seebold, New Orleans canvas stamp en verso, 10 in. x 14 in., period gilded frame. Note : Active in New Orleans in the 1870s and 1880s, Rudolph was praised for his portrait paintings and landscapes in local journals. Rudolph exhibited his work at the W.E. Seebold Gallery on Canal Street and kept a studio on the level above. Rudolph was most adept with sunsets and nocturnal skies; in this painting, the Louisiana landscape lies below approaching storm clouds. Two large live oak trees stand prominently along the edge of the meandering bayou. As often found in his work, a pirogue with three figures plies the water. Few of Rudolph's Louisiana landscapes are extant. His work is in the collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art, LSU Museum of Art and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art."
