Harold Rudolph (American/New Orleans, c. 1850-1884), "Crescent Moon over the Bayou", 1875, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, "W.E. Painting the Town: The Woodward Brothers Come to New Orleans. New Orleans: Jean Bragg Gallery, 2004, p. 12. Note: Harold Rudolph was active in New Orleans in the 1870s and 1880s. He was praised for his portrait paintings and landscapes in the local papers at the time. Rudolph exhibited his work with the preeminent W.E. Seebold Gallery on Canal Street, where he had a studio on the upper level. Skilled at depicting sunsets and nocturnal skies, in the painting offered here Rudolph masterfully depicts a fiery sunset at last glow reflected in the bayou in the foreground, which is framed by darkened cypress trees. A crescent moon lights the sky as it turns to night. As is often found in his work, a pirogue with figures plies the water on the right side of the composition. Few of Rudolph's Louisiana landscapes are extant. His work is in the collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art, LSU Museum of Art, and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art.
