Lot 386
Description:
Harold Rudolph (American/New Orleans, 1850-1883/4), "Portrait of Benjamin Ferdinand Wilson (1846-1915) of Kentucky", oil on canvas, signed and dated "1874" mid-right, stencil en verso reading "W. E. Seebold/Bookseller and Stationer/Dealer in Artist¹s Materials/166 Canal Street/New Orleans", 36 in. x 29 in., in a period giltwood frame.
- Provenance: Provenance: Descended in the family of the sitter, Hickman, KY. Note: This distinguished sitter is shown in a simple pose, belying the highly professional treatment by the very young artist. The high-quality canvas is marked by a full, legible stencil in the center of its reverse, representing the firm of W. E. Seebold, the South¹s most prominent post-Civil War art dealer, over whose premises the artist had his studio. The frame, with its large pattern of stenciling, is so fine as to presume a New Orleans origin as well. The portrait itself, though simple, is grand and effective; one wishes the artist might have lived longer than his thirty-three years (during the latter half-dozen years of which he turned to Romantic landscape painting).
