Description:

Harry Roseland (American, 1868-1950), "In the Cotton Fields", 1908, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, with Hirschl & Adler, New York, and Charleston Renaissance Galleries, Charleston, SC, labels en verso, 18 1/2 in. x 24 1/2 in., in a period frame.
PLEASE NOTE: Harry Roseland was one of the finest genre painters during the late 19th and early 20th century. A lifelong resident of Brooklyn, NY, Roseland was active in NY art circles, exhibiting at the Brooklyn Art Club and the National Academy of Design. Roseland specialized in African-American themes which brought him financial and critical success. One subject he explored was post-Civil War African-Americans engaged in various labors. In the work offered here, a group of pickers is toiling in the cotton fields. A young boy crouches at the front of the composition, engaging the viewer. His stance conveys the hardship of his work and his expression shows Roseland's sentimentality for the subject.
