Helen M. Turner ( 1858-1958, active New Orleans, 1880-1893, 1926-1958 "Portrait of a Girl in Blue", oil on canvas, unsigned and unfinished, 40in. x 30in. E500/700 Note: Purportedly one of the last paintings that Miss Turner executed. Provenance: Gift from the artist to the present owner. Miss Turner was the family's neighbor on Broadway Street in the University Section of Uptown New Orleans. In the photograph above, Miss Turner is shown with her maid Daisy at the present owner's home for afternoon tea. Note: Helen Turner grew up in New Orleans and first started painting at the age of 22 with the New Orleans Artist Association. In 1895, with the encouragement of her teacher Brors Wikstrom, she moved to New York City to study at the Art Students League. Among her important mentors were Kenyon Cox, Douglas Volk and William Merritt Chase. She is considered to be one of America's most important women artists.
