Description:

Henry John Hudson (British, 1881-1919), "Portrait of Mary Doris Reed", 1910, oil on canvas, monogrammed and dated upper right, 50 in. x 40 in., framed Note: In the portrait offered here, noted artist Henry John Hudson presents the sitter in a partial length, near profile position. This particular pose was adapted by artists such as Thomas Gainsborough and Sir Joshua Reynolds during the great age of portrait painting. Hudson’s beautifully muted background, unadorned except for the suggestion of a classical column to the left, the elegant upsweep of the sitter’s hair and formal, yet understated, white dress communicate an air of refinement, while the delicate flower petals and soft glow characterize the artist’s talent. The work offered here was exhibited at the London Royal Academy in 1910, number 415, possibly under the title “Portrait of a Young Lady.” Hudson first exhibited his work at the Royal Academy in London in 1881 and would continue to be represented there until 1910. Although few biographical details are available on the artist, exhibition records indicate his popularity throughout Great Britain.
