Clearing", oil on canvas, signed lower right 17" x 22", gilt frame. Note: Herzog was a gentleman painter whose passion drove him on rather than a need for notoriety, his paintings were not for sale until after his death. He travelled widely, Florida, Maine, Mexico, the West Coast, in search of inspiring scenery. Hes Florida paintings date from the mid 1890's to about 1910. They are the products of his visits to the Gainsville area where his son John lived. It's tropical landscape appealed to Herzog's sense of the exotic and in his images the artist used a freer and more liquid brush stoke.
