Conrad Provenance: The volumes bear the 19th c. bookplate of John P. Conrad of Franklin, LA, likely a member of the Conrad-Weeks family, prominent Acadiana plantation owners. Note: Niles' Register was one of the great weekly magazines with a circulation comparable to today's Newsweek or Time. As a resource of early 19th c. politics and economics, nothing compares to the vast record of articles, reprints of public documents, treaties, data, War of 1812, contained in the Register. Jefferson wrote, "I have found it very valuable as a Repository of documents...and facts of the day, and the ease with which the index enables us to turn to them."
