  • Provenance: Provenance: Descended in the family of the artist.~ Note: Painting was a family tradition for Hilah Wheeler. Her father was the New York engraver and illustrator Alexander Drake. While he was employed as the art director of Century Magazine, she began to take an interest in painting. Hilah studied at the Art Students League, as well as in Europe, and counted John Twatchtman, Walter Appleton Clark and George Bridgeman as instructors. Hilah married fellow artist Clifton Wheeler, and they had one daughter Hilah Mary Wheeler Remaily who followed in her parent's footsteps and became a portrait painter.
