Hobson Pittman (American/North Carolina, 1899-1972), "Moonlit Gardens - Cypress Gardens Near Charleston", c. 1946, pastel on paper, signed upper left "Hobson Pittman", artist seal upper right, sight 17 1/2 in. x 23 1/4 in. framed Note: A native of North Carolina, Hobson Pittman was an accomplished painter known for his atmospheric landscapes and interior views of stately homes. Spending most of his career in the Philadelphia area, Pittman was on assignment in Charleston in 1946 for LIFE magazine, a publication created by Henry Luce in 1934. In addition to creating pastel drawings of interiors of Charleston's elegant homes to illustrate an article on the city's architectural heritage, Pittman painted ethereal landscapes depicting the distinctive Lowcountry geography.
