Description:

Ida Kohlmeyer (American/New Orleans, 1912-1997), "Cloistered #10", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 26 7/8 in. x 26 7/8 in., in a giltwood frame.

  • Notes: Note: In Kohlmeyer's paintings from the 1960s, she often expanded her geometric style into more organic forms that seem to expand from a central point towards the edge of the canvas. These radiating, concentric works are somewhat similar to Georgia O'Keeffe's series of flower paintings and therefore have been compared thematically to O'Keeffe's overt representations of female sexuality and genitalia. While some of Kohlmeyer's works, such as Contained, 1969, illustrated in Michael Plante's book Ida Kohlmeyer: Systems of Color, are more overtly sexual and comparable to O'Keeffe's paintings, the present lot is more stylized, focusing slightly more on the geometric side of Kohlmeyer's earlier works.
