Description:

Ida Rittenberg Kohlmeyer (American/New Orleans, 1912-1997), "Banquet", 1957, oil on canvas, unsigned, "Ida Kohlmeyer: Thirty Years, The Mint Museum of Art, cat. no. 3" and "Orleans Gallery, Royal St., NOLA" labels with artist, title and date en verso, 36 1/2 in. x 57 1/4 in., period frame. Provenance: Acquired from the artist; thence by descent. Exh.: "Ida Kohlmeyer: Thirty Years", The Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, NC, 1983, and illustrated in the accompanying catalogue, no. 3, p. 53. Note: Ida Kohlmeyer spent the summer of 1956 at Hans Hofmann’s summer art school in Provincetown, MA. At the time, Hofmann was considered the best modernist art teacher in the country. He had a profound and dramatic effect on Kohlmeyer’s work, as evident in the canvas offered here. Painted in 1957, the year after she had studied with the modern master, she uses vivid, contrasting colors and rectangular stacking elements to form the composition, all techniques gleaned directly from Hoffman. This painting is a true masterpiece of Kohlmeyer’s earliest Abstract Expressionist work.
