Lot 345
Description:
Ida Rittenberg Kohlmeyer (American/New Orleans, 1912-1997), "Blocked No. 3", c. 1964-65, oil and mixed media on canvas, signed lower right, titled on The Glade Gallery, New Orleans label en verso, 45 in. x 33 in., in a period slat frame.
- Provenance: Provenance: Naples Art Gallery, Naples, Florida.
- Literature: Reference: Ida Kohlmeyer: Thirty Years. Charlotte: Mint Museum, 1983.
- Notes: Note: Although greatly influenced by her Abstract Expressionist colleagues and mentors, Hans Hofmann and Mark Rothko, Kohlmeyer became concerned that her work was excessively influenced by Rothko's style and technique. In fact, in 1963, because of her fears, "she makes a concious effort to sever her dependence on Rothko's imagery by forcing herself to paint in complete opposition to Rothko's soft misty-edged rectangles." The result of Kohlmeyer's transformation in style can be noted in the current lot, which, while retaining her abstract forms and light palette, includes circular elements and hard edges previously absent in her paintings. Contemporary Art collector Luba Glade ran The Glade Gallery in the 1960s and was influential in the establishment of the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans. Her passion for supporting the arts, and local contemporary artists in particular, was known throughout the New Orleans community and beyond until her death in November 2009.
