Description:

Ida Rittenberg Kohlmeyer (American/New Orleans, 1912-1997), "Kinesis #3", oil on masonite, signed lower left, Orleans Gallery, 527 Royal Street label and remnants of Ruth White Gallery, New York label en verso, 54 in. x 48 in.

  • Provenance: Provenance: Orleans Gallery, New Orleans, c. 1963-1964 ~ Note: The Ruth White Gallery label dates from Ida Kohlmeyer's prestigious early solo exhibitions of 1959, 1961, and 1965 During Kohlmeyer's time as an adjunct teacher at Tulane's Newcomb College, the famed abstract painter Mark Rothko arrived as a Visiting Artist. While in New Orleans, Rothko stayed in the Rittenberg family home and made the garage his studio. Kohlmeyer's and Rothko's close relationship is evident in the atmospheric "Kinesis #3". Kohlmeyer utilizes Rothko's limitation on color, strong use of rectangles, and presentation of emotional expression without mental interference. In an interview Kohlmeyer stated: "It was very strange, however, that people who saw my work at that time hardly ever mentioned how I leaned on Rothko, and I thought I was copying him." "Kinesis #3" was likely completed in the early sixties due to its similarities in color and use of quadrangle shapes similar to those found in the Ogden Museum of Southern Art's painting "Portent #2", which is dated 1960 The compelling "Kinesis #3" stands testament to Kohlmeyer's brilliant Abstract Expressionist period.
