Description:

Ike E. Morgan (American/Texas, b. 1958), "Seated Female Nude with Orange Background", "Seated Female Nude in Green Robe", and "Portrait of a Man", 3 mixed medias on paper or cardboard, former signed mid-left, 20 1/2 in. x 15 1/2 in. to 23 1/4 in. x 18 in., framed alike. (3 pcs.) Provenance: Barrister's Gallery, New Orleans. Note: “It’s something to do as the years go by. Painting gives me something to achieve or get done.” Ike Morgan learned to paint in the Austin State Hospital where he was a live-in patient from age 17 to 41 for severe schizophrenia. He would paint his subjects, mostly portraits, from magazines at the hospital; U.S. Presidents and celebrities being his most common subjects with occasional erotic imagery from gentlemen’s magazines. He would paint on anything he could find from cardboard to shirts and worked mainly in pencil, pastel and acrylic, charging the hospital staff 25 cents a work so he could buy more art supplies. While Morgan draws his inspiration from existing photographs and images, often choosing his subjects based on their unique facial expressions or attractiveness, the works he produces are very much his own. Using varying styles from simple line drawing to a more polished almost Fauvist control of color and shape his work has been described being both raw and extremely intuitive as is evident the lot offered here.
