In the Manner of Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier, A Pair of French Rococo Patinated Bronze Figural Candlesticks, 19th c., the standards formed of putti holding foliate scrolls supporting a candlecup, height 9 in. Note: These candlesticks are very similar in style to designs created by Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier, a Rococo architect and silversmith, whose surviving works are housed at such museums as the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Many of his drawings and designs for architectural elements, sculptures, and decorative arts were copied as etchings that still exist today in a collection at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. From these prints, one can note the similarities to these Rococo Revival Candlesticks in asymmetrical orientation, ornamentation, and shell and rocaille forms, as well as the inclusion of figural putti supporting the candlecup.
