Description:

In the Style of Montague Dawson (British, 1895-1973), "The Trap - 1918" (as titled in pencil on stretcher), or "A Q-Boat Preparing to Fight on Summons to Surrender" (as titled on frame plaque), oil on canvas, inscribed "M. Dawson" lower left, 20 in. x 30 in. E6000-8000 Provenance: Private Louisiana Collection (25 years); Williams and Sons London. Note: The most celebrated marine painter of the 20th c. seems almost always to have signed with both his names, spelling out "Montague" in full; but this unusually calm composition is inscribed with only an initial "M.", and is more subdued than the dramatically windswept canvases that Montague Dawson was already painting, even in his 23rd year in 1918. Still, the artist is documented to have worked on a series of pictures devoted to the ships of World War I (1914-1918 , and this may be such a work, more soberly composed because of its documentary character.
