Description:

Irena Kononova (Russian/California, 20th c.), "Doorway", 1995, oil, sand and marble dust on canvas, signed and dated lower right, 68 in. x 48 in., framed. Note: Russian born, Irena Kononova’s work explores the relationship between human advancement and nature. After receiving a degree from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Kononova moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where her art has been exhibited at numerous galleries, universities and museums, including the Sandra Lee Gallery, University of California at Berkeley, and the Maturango Museum in Ridgecrest. In the work offered here Kononova unites an intriguing architectural element with a strong interest in formal composition. Her use of texture, a saturated palette and delicate glazes create a world of visual richness and subtly that in the artist’s own words: “…provoke the viewers into contemplating the ever widening gap between our civilization and the eternal world of nature through an exploration of the form of expansive landscapes and their juxtaposition with human-made interiors.” Ref.: “Bio”.
