Description:

Italian Late Rococo Fruitwood Inlaid and Burled Walnut Commode, c. 1765, serpentine top, conforming case with two short drawers over two long drawers, serpentine apron, cabriole legs, h. 37 in., w. 56 1/2 in., d. 24 3/4 in. Note: Veneer shrinkages and repairs. Provenance: Sotheby's New York, Apr. 1, 2010, lot 102. Note: Although the bombé commode originated in France, the form quickly became popular in Italy as the French Rococo style spread throughout Europe during the 18th century. Italian cabinetmakers applied their own distinctive regional design to the commode, including the use of walnut veneers, natural wood inlay, and delicately attenuated legs—all recognizably Italian characteristics of the walnut commode in the present lot.
