Italian Gilded and Pietra Dura Table, 19th c., marble inscribed "Fitzhugh Coyle Washington D.C.", the black marble top inlaid with colorful specimen stones, flowers and birds; baluster-form base, winged griffin supports, h. 32 1/4 in., w. 32 in., d. 24 in. Note: Fitzhugh Coyle (1818 – 1877) was a successful businessman and prominent member of society in Washington D.C. In 1865 Coyle co-founded the National Bank of the Republic of Washington and served as bank president until his death. The C-Street residence on Capitol Hill, built for Fitzhugh Coyle and his family in 1852, was considered a “very pretentious style of dwelling for that time.” Ref.: Records of the Columbia Historical Society, Washington D.C, published in 1902.
