Lot 105
Description:
Italian School, second half of the 17th c., in the Style of the Bamboccianti, "An Extensive Landscape with Travelers and Ships", oil on canvas, unsigned, with an "Ernst Alden, Framemaker, London" label en verso, 24 1/4 in. x 38 7/8 in., in a later carved, gessoed and giltwood frame.
- Provenance: Provenance: Estate of noted Philadelphia dealer Charles Sterling.
- Notes: Note: The Bamboccianti were a small group of Low Country artists working in Rome in the early 17th c. The handling of the mounted travelers and clouds strongly resembles their work, as does the extensive landscape riparion scene. This remarkable picture is unusual in showing the developed style of employing small touches of primary color on the costumes, a self-confident and masterly technique which characterizes the work of the best artists from Poussin (who was associated with this school) to Canaletto.
