An American Late Classical Mahogany Center Table, mid-19th c., J. & J.W. Meeks, New York, with New Orleans label, dodecagonal Egyptian marble top, conforming molded frieze, incurvate pedestal with arches and columns, plinth base, scrolled feet, casters, height 29 3/4 in., diameter 37 in Note: A nearly identical table is at the New York State Museum. Though similar center tables are pictured in the well-known Meeks broadside, this example with the reverse serpentine frieze and architectonic standard is among the most ambitious produced by the firm. Joseph W. Meeks opened his New Orleans warehouse in 1821. New Orleans city directories list the Meeks firm at 29 Chartres Street, 23 Chartres Street and 39 Royal Street between 1830 and 1838.
