Description:

J.S. Marsh (American, 19th c.), "Mouth of the St. John's River, Fla-Looking out to Sea", 1872, oil on board, signed and dated lower left, signed, titled, and dated on period label en verso, 11 3/4 in. x 19 3/4 in., framed Note: Another landscape by this artist, also dated 1872, is in the Roger Ogden collection and illustrated in Art in the American South, p. 24. The painting offfered here shows the St. John's River lighthouse among the dunes and palm trees at the mouth of the river. Originally built in 1830, the lighthouse went through several relocations at the mouth of the river. This work is a rare early view of Northeast Florida. Only a handful of artists, such as John Bunyan Bristol, George Harvey and Edwin Lord Weeks, had painted views of Florida earlier than Marsh's work here. Reference: Delehanty, Randolph.
