Description:

Jack Boynton (American/Texas, 1928-2010), "Top of the Beanstalk", 1968, acrylic on canvas, unsigned, exhibition label with artist and title en verso, 80 in. x 68 in., unframed. Provenance: Property of the New Orleans Museum of Art, Sold to Benefit the Acquisitions Fund. Note: Jack Boynton was a key figure in the post-World War II art scene in Houston, Texas where he began exhibiting work in 1950. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston curator Alison de Lima Greene described Boynton's work as "introspective, visionary landscapes.” This characterization is particularly applicable to the painting offered here. Reminiscent of rural Texas, the distant horizon line emphasizes a vast empty space underneath a wide blue sky. The black and red border frames the scene and further distances the viewer from the solitary space. Britt, Douglas. “Houston artist, teacher James ‘Jack’ Boynton dies at 82.” Houston Chronicle.
