Description:

Jack R. Meyers (American/New Orleans, 1930-1994), "Visiting Times", acrylic on canvas, signed and dated "1987" lower right, 16 in. x 20 in., attractively framed.

  • Notes: Note: When forced into early retirement due to fragile health, the self-taught artist, Jack Meyers, began to actively paint charming scenes of rural southern life. The subject matter of his paintings was drawn from the personal experiences he had traveling through the countryside as a salesman. Since his meticulously rendered paintings were time consuming to create, the artist usually painted in a relatively small scale. With the painting "Visiting Times", Meyers chose a large format that allowed a multi-layered scene. The painting depicts a lively cabin scene including quilts hanging on the line, chickens, laundry being done, and company coming by for a visit; in the background, the steamboat Natchez floats down the Mississippi River while a railroad train loaded with cotton bales travels beside the river.
