“Freddy” Mugnier as he is known in the wine world is the GOAT. The best to ever do it. His Musigny is the standard-bearer; the benchmark for not only this Grand Cru vineyard, but one of the handful of producers that define the region of Burgundy as a whole. It’s one of the oldest continuously family-owned domaines in Burgundy going back to the 1880s making Freddy a 5th-generation vigneron although Freddy was not always into the family business. Initially. he studied to be an engineer, but when his father passed away in 1980 and Bernard Clair (Bruno’s father) was managing the estate, Freddy felt compelled to step up and take over the domaine. 1985 was his 1st vintage and the year he attended oenology school in Beaune. Frédéric has an extremely technical mind so his decisions in the vineyards or the winery must first pass the muster of reason. Yet every one of his choices is guided by his intuition and gut feeling that has resulted in him crafting some of the purest examples of Pinot Noir that only a lucky few can get their hands on and are the envy of all. The Mugnier parcel of the Musigny Grand Cru is one of the largest holdings at 2.82 acres and is entirely on the highly-regarded section known as Grand Musigny. The vines were planted between 1947 and 1962.
