Jacques Guillaume Lucien Amans (b. Netherlands 1801, d. Paris, France 1888, active New Orleans 1836- 1858), "Portrait of Col. Thomas Bryan Pugh", oil on canvas, signed and dated "1838" upper right, 42in x 32 .25in. E20000-30000 Provenance: Descended in the family of the sitter. Note: Thomas Pugh, who originally hailed from Albemarle County, North Carolina, was a successful planter who built Madewood Plantation in Napoleonville in 1850 A visit to His brother William's plantation, Woodlawn, on Bayou Lafourche, so impressed Pugh that He returned to North Carolina, sold His property, and came back to build Madewood. As Herman de Bachelle' Seebold wittily writes in Old Louisiana Plantation Homes and Family Trees, "for years there has been a conundrum associating the family name with Bayou Laforche. 'Why is Bayou Lafourche like a church aisle? Because there are Pugh's on both sides of the Bayou."' Unfortunately for Thomas Pugh, He contracted yellow fever during the construction of Made wood and did not live to see its completion. However, this extremely well-executed portrait has survived to attest to the great skill of Jacques Amans. This portrait is illustrated on page 218 of Louisiana Portraits, compiled by Mrs. Thomas Nelson Carter Bruns, The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Louisiana, 1975 Ref.: Seebold, Herman de Bachelle, Old Louisiana Plantation Homes and Family Trees, Pelican Publishing Co.: Gretna, 1941
