Description:

James Gibson (American/Florida, mid-20th c.), Florida Moonlight, oil on upson board, signed lower right, 24 in. x 36 in., in a period Florida Highwaymen frame. E2000/3000 Note: A group of African- American landscape painters working in Miami, Florida area during the 1950s and 1960s have been identified as the Highwaymen. The early Highwaymen, including James Gibson, Harold Newton and Alfred Hair, were influenced and mentored by the dean of Florida landscape painting Albert E. Backus. Typically, the Highwaymen painted on upson board, a manufactured good used by roofers, framed with crown molding and marketed from the trunks of their cars. They created a new form of fantasy Florida landscape painting that formulaically contained wind- swept palm trees, billowing cumulus clouds and the ocean. The highwaymen have recently gained a renewed popularity and critical attention.
