signed and dated 1843 lower right, 28 1/2" x 50", original mahogany gilt-lined frame, handwritten inscription on stretcher label reads: "Ship Russia, Captain Ashlin Gilliat, off the South Point - Light - Mouth of the River Mississippi, J.G. Evans pinxit. 1843 U.S.A." Note: James Guy Evans, a self-taught Marine painter, was active in New Orleans between 1843 and 1853. Born in New York City, Evans enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at Philadelphia in 1829. He served aboard the USS Delaware in the Mediterranean Squadron until 1838 and produced several paintings of that ship as well as the Frigate Constitution during his service. The ship the "Russia" was registered in New Orleans, September 12, 1842, with owner Andrew S. Barker and Master Ashlin Gilliat. Evans first appears in New Orleans listing in 1843. He had a brief partnership with another well known New Orleans artist Edward Arnold. They shared a studio in 1850 in the Faubourg Marigny and jointly signed paintings. Evans' paintings are rare and distinctive for their naive and bold style. Listings include the Encyclopedia of New Orleans Artists 1718-1918, The New York Historical Society Dictionary of Artists in America, and the Dictionary of Marine Artists. He is represented in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Newport, Rhode Island Historical Society, The U.S. Naval Academy Museum, Annapolis, MD, The Historic New Orleans Collection and the Louisiana State Museum among others.
