James L. Russell (American, 1872-1937), 'Set Design for the 1926 Broadway production of the play 'Ned McCobb's Daughter', written by Sidney Coe Howard (American, 1891-1932)', watercolor on illustration board, pencil-signed and titled, Arthur Brown & Co., New York illustration board printed en verso, 12 in. x 20 in., unframed. Note: This watercolor set design depicts the interior of the restaurant that Carol McCobb Callahan operated out of her house. The critically acclaimed writer Sidney Coe Howard, who wrote the screenplay for 'Gone with the Wind', wrote the crime drama. 'Ned McCobb's Daughter' premiered on Broadway in 1926 at the John Golden Theater and was adapted into a movie in 1929 starring Irene Rich and Carole Lombard. James Russell's set designs appeared in Broadway plays and television for over fifty years. Russell designed the sets for Thornton Wilder's play 'Skin of Our Teeth' and regularly worked for the Philco Playhouse and Hallmark Theater.
