Description:

James McNeill silver American, 1834-1903, "The Stor, Kennedy 81, etching, post cancellation, signed and dated " 1861 in plate lower right, image 6 1/8in. x 11 1/4in., sheet 9 3/4in. x 15 3/8in. E7000- 10000 Note: This etching, The Storm, depicts the artist Matthew Ridley walking against the wind. It is one of Whisder's early attempts at landscape. In his catalogue raisonne of Whistler's etchings, Edward Kennedy states that four impressions of this plate were made, making precancelled impressions very rare. However, according to Ruth Fine, postcancellation impressions are not common either, making The Storm a rare, desirable Whistler etching.
