James Wells Champney (American, 1843-1903), "View from Libby Hill Overlooking James River, Virginia", 1873, gouache and pencil on paper, unsigned, titled and dated "Aug. 30,'73" lower left, 3 1/2 in. x 7 in., framed Note: The American illustrator, James Wells Champney joined the staff at "Scribner's Magazine" in 1872. In collaboration with writer, Edward King, they were assigned to do a series of articles entitled "The Great South". As part of their research, they traveled to major cities throughout the south. This drawing of "From Libby Hill, Overlooking the James River" was done by Champney during a sketching trip to Richmond, Virginia
