Japanese School, probably 18th/19th c., "Tokugawa Shogunate", ink and color on silk, mounted as a hanging scroll, from top to bottom depicting Hideyoshi's rigid class structure from Shogun, daimyos, samurai warriors, farmers, artisans, and tradesman to dogs, 90 3/4 in. x 32 3/4 in.
PLEASE NOTE: Provenance: Acquired by American physician, medical missionary, explorer and ethnographer, Hiram M. Hiller Jr. (1867-1921), probably during his "Fourth Expedition" to Japan in 1901; thence by descent in the Hiller family.
