Jay Remy Broussard (American/Baton Rouge, 1920-1976), "Only Light of Life", 1949, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, titled on "Art Association of New Orleans" label en verso, 24 in. x 12 in., in a period frame Note: Baton Rouge artist, Jay Remy Broussard, taught painting in the art department at Louisiana State University from 1949 to 1956. Broussard furthered his career as Director of the State of Louisiana Art Commission in Baton Rouge from 1947 to the 1970s and served as president of the Southeastern Museum Conference. An Active member of the New Orleans Art Association, Broussard earned many prizes for his paintings at their annual exhibitions at the Delgado Museum of Art (today the New Orleans Museum of Art). Exhibited at the New Orleans Art Association in 1949, the charming painting "Only Light of Life" depicts an African American church as the congregation gathers for evening service.
