JAZZ/NEW ORLEANS/JIM CROW/LOUIS "SATCHMO" ARMSTRONG. ALS. A three page typewritten (green typescript) letter dated February 27th, 1945 to Pal Joe (Lindsey) in New Orleans. Written on personal Satchmo/Pops stationery from the Cafe Zanzibar, Broadway-New York where he was playing an engagement with his band. Armstrong writes thanking Mr. Lindsey for a gift delivered to him by Leslie Martinez containing "... the finest cigarettes of all kinds... And chewing gum etc..." An interesting and newsy letter in which Satchmo informs Lindsey that he has been "... so terribly busy...I was sure you understood..." as he hadn't written since "... I left there the last time..." (New Orleans) He reminisces about playing two gigs: "... Then too-we were doubling from the Zanzibar Night Club to the Roxy Theatre... We did this for two weeks and ///// speaking of some tired 'Cats that was us... But we went through it alright...". Armstrong continues telling Joe that his sister (Mama Lucy) is shortly coming up to New York to visit him and his family. He asks that Joe might look out for his sister and assist her if he can in a low key way without causing any fuss. Mama Lucy was obviously somewhat worried about making the trip and taking the train to New York. Armstrong suggests that Joe might go to the train with Mama Lucy: "...when she gets to her compartment or whatever it is-get a hold of the Porter whom's look after her-lay a 'Finn on him and tell him to let her know even when they serve the food-and see that she gets her meals right there in her room... Then by that - I know she want (sic) have to come in touch with that awful 'James Crow... (Jim Crow) to be exact....". He continues by saying that "... we will be waiting on this end for her when she arrives." He also hopes that Joe will be able to make it back up to New York himself when they "...can go around and see the town like we used to when we had Al Washington and that bunch... Tose were the days...And P.S. between me and you - that was my best band...". The letter concludes with one of Louis Armstrong's rather bawdy stories which he was somewhat fond of relating. It concludes: Am Pluto Waterly Yours, and is signed "Louis Armstrong" in blue ink, with a hand written P.S. in Armstrong's hand "P.S. Remind Mama Lucy to Bring Some File (FEELAY) And Kayinne Peppers".
