Historian Philip Burden has called the work, "... arguably the finest description of the Americas published in the 17th century". The maps, done by Gerritsz, mapmaker for the Dutch West India Company, were groundbreaking, especially the map of New England. It was the first map to name N. Amsterdam, Manhattan (Manbattes), the Hudson River (Noordt Rivier) and Massachusetts.
