Description:

Jeanne Amelie Sills Reynal (American/New York, 1903-1983), "Hanging Man", 1950, concrete, glass and mixed media on panel, signed, titled and dated on artist label en verso, 30 1/4 in. x 22 1/2 in., framed. Provenance: Property of the New Orleans Museum of Art, Sold to Benefit the Acquisitions Fund. Note: Jeanne Amelie Sills Reynal was an acclaimed mosaic artist and an important part of the New York Abstract Expressionist movement. She divorced mosaic from its traditional forms and offered them independent of architecture as stand-alone pieces. Her works are often described as “sensual” due to her exploration of surface texture and the fluidity of her colorful forms. These characteristics are well displayed in this particular lot through the abstract lines and pebbly texture that provoke a strong visual as well as tactile impression.
