Description:

Joe Barth (American/Louisiana, 20th c.), "Catfish", papier-mâché, unsigned, h. 26 in., w. 23 in., d. 32 in., metal and wood base, overall h. 36 in. Provenance: Property of the New Orleans Museum of Art, Sold to Benefit the Acquisitions Fund. Note: Joe Barth, along with his brother Barry, are known in Louisiana and New Orleans as celebrated Mardi Gras float artists. The papier-mâché sculpture offered here, a small masterpiece reminiscent of the large-scale catfish which donned the side of the Barth-designed grand entrance to the Louisiana World Exposition in 1984, is an example of Barth’s skill with the medium and creative imagination.
