Description:

John Bradley (British/American, d. after 1847), "Children on a Terrace", 1826, pencil and watercolor on paper, signed and dated lower left, inscribed en verso, 12 1/4 in. x 10 in., unframed. Note: British-American artist John Bradley is believed to have arrived in the United States around 1830 or 1832. By the end of 1832, he was known to be working on Staten Island, and listings in New York City directories include him as a portrait and miniature painter from 1836 to 1847. Few paintings prior to the artist's arrival in New York are known, making this early work from 1826 a rare find. Bradley's most well-known and acclaimed painting, "The Cellist" of 1832, is located at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. and clearly reflects Bradley's British origins. Bradley most often painted full-length figures of children, either in detailed interiors or within a landscape. An intriguing mix between the two settings, the work offered here poses three children on the railing of a classical portico with hints of a lush landscape behind them. The delicately painted, fresh-faced children look as though they were captured mid-play by the artist, who perfectly rendered their clothing and accessories. The detail of the figures and strategic use of color are striking amidst the architectural elements - a glimpse into the talent of this fascinating artist.
