Description:

John Burman (British, known active 1886-1899), "Still Life with Oranges, Books, Wine-Jug and Glass, and an Oyster-Shell Ashtray", 1888, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, 13 1/4 in. x 11 in., period carved giltwood frame.
Note: This gem-like composition's handsome Aesthetic-Movement claret jug (somewhat in the style of the great William Burges, 1827-1881, a preeminent craftsman of such extravagant decorative arts of the later Victorian period), confirms the inscribed date in the 1880s. This handsome work gains considerable coloristic interest by the artist's inclusion of the tall plant, standing beside the table to the right.
