Description:

John "Crash" Matos (American, b. 1961), "Crash", 1981, acrylic on canvas, signed and dated en verso, sealing wax stamp with 2 sabers within a shield en verso, 42 in. x 59 3/4 in., unframed. Provenance: Property of the New Orleans Museum of Art, Sold to Benefit the Acquisitions Fund. Note: Coming of age in the Bronx in the 1960s and 1970s, John “Crash” Matos first picked up a can of spray paint at the age of 13 to cut his teeth as a graffiti artist by “bombing” the subway trains in the New York City rail yards. His bold, blocky signature—CRASH—greeted subway riders for almost two decades in the 1970s and 1980s, New York’s economically dire, artistically fertile days. By the 1980s, with the embrace of his work by galleries and at the urging of his friend and contemporary, Keith Haring, Crash was translating his explosive outdoor murals to the canvas’s more contained plane. In 1980, Crash curated the now iconic exhibition: "Graffiti Art Success for America" at Fashion MODA, launching the graffiti movement that has remained very active through today. Known for his three-dimensional representation of lettering, the painting offered here is an iconic example of Crash’s graffiti art. Crash has been commissioned for many public mural projects, has partnered with numerous companies for projects, and has work in many permanent museum collections.
