Lot 838
John Edwards Holbrook, North American Herpetology; or, a Description of the Reptiles Inhabiting the United States, 1836-1840, published by J. Dobson, Philadelphia, folio (12 in. x 10 in.), Volumes 1, 2 and 4 (lacking 3), paper boards, leather title at spine, with 81 hand-colored lithographs of snakes, turtles, frogs and salamanders; interestingly, volume II has an addendum with two reworked prints of snakes from the first volume, whose color rendition was not deemed worthy enough. Note : The first edition of this work is scarce; volume IV is extremely rare. The fourth volume of the first edition was issued in 1840, but at about the same time Holbrook became dissatisfied with the entire edition and recalled it. Since volume IV had just been issued, it was the easiest to recall, and, indeed only a small portion of the stock may have been released at all.
