Provenance: Descended in the family of the sitters Note: This is a rare group of family portraits by esteemed portraitist John Genin from the 1880s and 1890s. From a noted New Orleans family, Louise “Lulu” M’Liss Rolling and her elder brother James Henry Rolling were the only children of Henry J. Rolling, Jr. and Louise Marie Reiss. Their grandfather, James J. Reiss (1822-1889), opened the J.J. Reiss Company at 417-423 Decatur Street in New Orleans in 1860 to manufacture confectioneries, crackers and candies. James J. Reiss also was a prominent citizen in the public affairs of the day, serving as director of the old Carrollton Railway and vice president of the Peoples Bank. Their mother, Louise Marie Reiss (1862-1886), was the second child and only daughter of James J. Reiss. Lulu Rolling married John Hudson Lange in 1914, a union resulting in one son, John Hudson Lange, Jr. of Asheville, NC.
