Description:

John Henry Twachtman (American, 1853-1902), "River Landscape with Woman Crossing", oil on canvas, signed lower left, 18 in. x 30 in. E20000/30000 Note: In 1883 Twachtman arrived in Paris to study at the Academie Julien. For the next two years he would be influenced by the plein-air manner of the French Impressionists like Claude Monet ( French, 1840-1926) and the works of James Abbot McNeill Whistler ( American, 1834-1903). This landscape with a woman crossing in a boat shows the influences of both, through the muted and densely woven color harmonies and the abstract patterning. After his return to America he settled in 1880 in Connecticut where he would execute most of his works and help found the American Impressionist group called the Ten.
