Description:

John Hultberg (American, 1922-2005), "Bucolic Window", 1973, oil on canvas, signed, dated, titled, "Martha Jackson Gallery, New York" and "Anderson Gallery, Buffalo" labels en verso, 50 in. x 68 in., period frame. Provenance: Property of the New Orleans Museum of Art, Sold to Benefit the Acquisitions Fund. Note: John Hultberg studied at the Art Students League in New York with artists Mark Rothko and Clyfford Still. In 1952, his work was introduced in an exhibition of emerging artists at the Museum of Modern Art, and two years later he won first prize at the Corcoran Gallery of Art Biennial. In 1955, Time magazine declared Hultberg the "latest darling of modern art." Hultberg’s work is included in many collections, including the Guggenheim, Metropolitan and Whitney Museums. He published numerous poems and taught in art schools across the country. Having painted continuously for over five decades, his work often defies categorization. In the canvas offered here, a landscape of indistinct objects evokes a colorful desert or long-forgotten ruins. Possessing both a dreamlike quality similar to Surrealism as well as distorted urban landscapes reminiscent of Abstract Expressionism, the artist created a style all his own.
