Description:

John Linnell (English, 1792-1882), "Landscape with Shepherd and Rustic Figures", oil on canvas, signed and dated "1845" lower left, 14 in. x 18 in., in a giltwood frame.

  • Notes: Note: In 1804, while under the instruction of naturalist John Varley (1778-1842), John Linnell had the distinction of being the youngest student admitted to The Royal Academy. Beginning his professional career as a portraitist, he worked on ivory and received commissions from the aristocracy and royalty. Deeply religious, Linnell yearned to depict his convictions on canvas. He achieved this through renderings of natural perfection, and eventually became one of the most prosperous landscape artists of his time. A contemporary of John Constable (1776-1837), William Blake (1757-1827), and Samuel Palmer (1805-1881), Linnell's works are included in many prominent collections including those of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery of London.
