Description:

John Mc Crady (American/Mississippi, 1911-1968), "Good Evening (Good Morning)", multi-stage on canvas affixed to board, signed lower left, exhibition label from the John McCrady Retrospective, New Orleans Museum of Art en verso, 13 1/2 in. x 17 1/2 in., frame painted by the artist. Provenance: Oxford, Mississippi Estate and descended through the family. Exhibited and reproduced in John McCrady, 1911-1968, New Orleans Museum of Art, 1975, no. 47, page 83. Note: The paintings of the great Southern painter John McCrady are always engaging and intriguing. Even the correct title of this painting remains provocative. In the exhibition catalogue for the "John McCrady" retrospective exhibition at New Orleans Museum of Art, the painting is illustrated and titled "Good Morning." On the exhibition label located on the back of the painting, the title is "Good Evening." Whether the young couple who met on the dirt road was at sunrise or sunset will have to rest in the eyes of the viewer. The Southern setting of a small rural community, the lively shadows of the dirt road, and colorful clouds and sky in motion with a hand-painted frame are quintessential elements frequently used by John McCrady in his paintings.
