Description:

John McCrady (American/Mississippi, 1911-1968), "Portrait of Catherine Eskridge Eatman (1913-1984)", oil on canvas, signed and dated "1932" lower right, inscribed "Eatman" on stretcher bar en verso, 35 1/8 in. x 24 1/8 in., unframed.

  • Provenance: Provenance: Descended in the family of the sitter.
  • Notes: Note: Catherine Eskridge Eatman became a good friend of John McCrady after his family moved to Oxford, Mississippi in 1928; together they attended art classes held by a local teacher. McCrady painted her portrait in 1932, the year he left the University of Mississippi to move to New Orleans and enroll in the New Orleans Art School. This early McCrady reveals elements of what would become his signature style. Catherine Eatman attended John McCrady's art school in New Orleans while her husband was fighting in World War II, and maintained a life-long friendship with McCrady and his wife. From 1965 to 1974 Eatman was the Director of the Mary Buie Museum in Oxford, MS. In 1966, during her tenure, the museum held an exhibition of McCrady's late work. A letter to McCrady from a friend gives the following impression of the exhibit and of Mrs. Eatman: "Hope to give the show more centrated(sic) attention tomorrow, for the museum is open Sunday afternoon. There was so much conversation with Mrs. Eatman who is, however, not nearly as devouring as her almost alarming name suggests. She drove me around the town and miles into the country - to me purely McCrady country - to see the farm where they are building a house."
